From the moment Mistwood Golf Course in Lake Ann opened in 1993, the facility has not disappointed those who seek a quality round of golf at green fees reasonably low for such a gratifying experience. Golf Digest ranks Mistwood among Michigan’s best public tracks, consistently awarding the three courses four stars.

Architect Jerry Matthews embraced the land formations that define Mistwood to produce one of his finest designs in the state. The White nine, part of the original 18-hole design along with the Blue nine, has more of a links nature, with open spaces and native fescues gracing the entire nine holes. The Blue nine is more typical Northern Michigan fare, but atypical in enjoyment and playability. Both nines open with gentle par 4s and build to an exhilarating finish. Architect Ray Hearn was on staff at Matthews’ Natural Course Design when the Red nine was added in 1997. The bunkering is more pronounced and the greens reflective of Hearn’s Irish- and Scottish-style influences. Mixing and matching the nines adds an element of enjoyment not found at facilities with fewer than 27 holes. The Red and White nines have one par 5, the Blue two making it the longer of the nines.

Owner Sherm Baarstad is by no means arrogant when he says Mistwood has “some of the best greens you’ll ever play.” They’re darn quick with exceptional roll. There’s nothing tricky about them; no sweeping valleys or undulated tiers, just pure putting surfaces that require adept skill at reading break and speed.

With 27 holes, Mistwood can readily accommodate large groups, outings and leagues. The full range practice facility allows players to work on all aspects of their game. The “Little Nine” is a small par 3 course which can even be played at night with glow balls.

The Sunset Bar and Grill is a great place to relax after golf and enjoy the beautiful sunsets. The menu satisfies a wide variety of dining tastes, featuring local favorites as well as a full bar. Mistwood has two-bedroom golf villas to accommodate Stay and Play packages. Even during the height of the season 36 holes of golf with overnight lodging is as low as $140. Nestled between Lake Michigan and Traverse City, Mistwood becomes an ideal place to anchor and enjoy all the Leelanau Peninsula offers: miles of sandy beaches, wineries, biking, hiking, fishing and sightseeing. Should you desire, Mistwood has a number of single-family home sites available near the White nine suitable for year round living or vacation homes.

A round of championship golf at Mistwood is never more that $54 with a cart and only $46 after August 15. Matinee rates kick in at 1:00pm. Juniors 13 and younger play free when accompanied by a paying adult.
