The Golf Club at Harbor Shores isn’t just a
golf course. It means so much more to Benton
Harbor and its surrounding communities.
When the Jack Nicklaus-designed course opens its full 18 holes later this summer, it will be the first major step in the rebirth of a whole community. What were once numerous manufacturing sites that left deposits of industrial waste have been transformed into a marvel of golf, where friends can gather for a memorable round, outdoor leisure, or simply a good time near the shores of Lake Michigan.
The leadership team at Harbor Shores, a non-profit developer, investing in the future of Southwest Michigan and building this resort community and golf course to be a catalyst to support on going economic, environmental, and social revitalization. The 530 acre master-planned resort plans to feature a full calendar of events and world-class amenities, including a riverwalk with restaurants and shops, deep-water marinas, a boutique hotel and spa, miles of recreational trails and rivers, acres of parks and green space, and nearly 800 residences.
This visionary project is a public-private partnership and truly one of a kind in the country.
Hiring Nicklaus ensured the golf course would be one-of-a-kind as well. The 6,856-yard par 71 layout is one of just two public Nicklaus courses in Michigan. Even The Golden Bear understands the bigger picture when it comes to Harbor Shores.
“This [property] is really a huge enabler to drive community transformation and economic growth – not only in Benton Harbor but throughout Southwestern Michigan,” Nicklaus said during last June’s visit to the property to inspect the final three holes along the dunes of Lake Michigan.
Harbor Shores will thrill golfers with a unique mix of dunes, wetlands and woods. Three holes deliver views of Lake Michigan, four more ride rolling terrain through forest, and eleven others border the Paw Paw River, wetlands and Ox Creek.
The tees on the 426-yard seventh hole sit as an island in a large wetland with the green tucked atop a sand dune. The tee shot on the 406-yard eighth hole plays off those sand dunes to a fairway below. The two-tier green on the par-5 tenth hole features a daunting 60-degree slope. Players will no doubt remember Harbor Shores’ collection of five par 3s, including the monstrous fourth hole that plays 227 yards from the white tees.
The hiring of KemperSports Management will ensure that course conditions and service will be among the best in the Midwest. Come play Michigan’s latest golf wonder and come back again and again to watch the project develop into something spectacular right before your eyes.
